Design Tips
Snapdragons are good vertical line flowers in design work. They work well when incorporated into natural garden type vase arrangements or designs. Snapdragons also add an unusual appearance to bouquets and can be used to replace Gladiolas, Delphinium, or stock in large wedding or funeral arrangements.
Ethylene Sensitivity
High. Most Snapdragon cultivars are sensitive to ethylene. Flower shattering is the most common symptom.
Pest & Disease Information
Susceptible to botrytis.
Troubleshooting
Flower drop (Shattering) due to ethylene exposure and damage. Treat with an ethylene action inhibitor product. Geotropic bending (stem ends bending downwards). Snapdragons are prone to geotropic bending (when stored or shipped at a horizontal position). The flower bending phenomenon is more pronounced at elevated temperature. Curvatures in inflorescence will straighten somewhat when hydrated under direct, bright light. Snapdragons are extremely sensitive to gravity. Flowers held in horizontal position quickly curve upward towards the light. Floret color fading. Better light exposure and use of flower food help. Buds fail to open due to ethylene damage or prolonged storage. After following standard flower care procedures, do not remove more leaves than necessary, as this can stimulate flower fall. As flowers open towards the top of the stems, the bottom blooms will naturally die. Simply remove these to prolong vase life.
