What to Look for When Purchasing
Phalaenopsis should be purchased when at least two flowers per spike are open, or fully open if the bloom is purchased individually. Look for perky flowers that are free of discoloration, spotting and brown tips. Check the flowers for any damage when you receive them.
Vase life shorter than in vases.
Phalaenopsis orchids can be used as cut stems either alone or mixed with other flowers. Blooms can be used in corsage work as well as bridal bouquets to offer an ultra chic design.
Most varieties are very sensitive to ethylene which result in flower and/or bud drop. Treat with anti-ethylene product. Flower sensitivity to ethylene changes with age.
Pest & Disease Information
Botrytis (small circular pinkish or brown spots), and Anthracnose (small round black spots on petals) flower blight can occur on petals. Good sanitation and humidity management helps to control.
Limp, droopy sprays. Florets are transparent, have dry patches, and/or are discolored. Floret Abscission (drop). The use of an ethylene action inhibitor is a must.
