Delphinium
Delphinium is an important line flower that is available year-round, with colors ranging from white to pink, purple and blue. It has spikes 8 to 20 inches (20-25 cm) long consisting of individual florets that are 1 to 2 inches (2.5-5 cm) in diameter. The spikes are born on stems with medium green leafy foliage. Multiple flowers occur in a spike.

What to Look for When Purchasing
Normally harvested with one to two open flowers at the bottom of the spike. Make sure stems have been treated with an ethylene action inhibitor. Avoid stems stored for more than 3 days. Avoid stems where flowers already started to shatter

Design Tips
Flowers open from the bottom of the stem to the top. Therefore, when designing with Delphinium, it is best to select a bunch with a few inches of closed flowers at the top of the stem. Delphinium are naturals for airy, casual garden arrangements. The delicate spikes make it an excellent line flower to give bouquets and arrangements a Victorian look. Delphinium can be used in vase or floral foam, however foam will slightly shorten the vase life. Be sure to cut stems and hydrate them well prior to inserting into vase or foam. Flowers should hydrate overnight before using in design work.
