Rose (Standard)
Roses are globally the most popular and recognizable flower variety and must haves during Valentine's Day. Characterized by a single flower at the end of the stem, roses have multiple petals (up to 40-60) in a single flower. Their blooms span nearly the full color spectrum from shades of pastels to pure saturated colors to bold confident hues in solid, striped or variegated petals. From the purest white to the darkest red, plus pink, yellow, orange, mauve, russet, and many shades in between, roses coordinate with any setting. Very few commercial varieties sold today have a fragrance.

What to Look for When Purchasing
Correct harvest stage: Roses are harvested at different levels of maturity, depending on marketing and cultivar. For long-distance transport or storage, roses should usually be harvested with some of the sepals reflexed (stage 2). For general use, stage 2 to 4 depending on the openness of flower desired. Stem length: stems are graded based on stem length (typically 25 to 70 cm). Free from botrytis. Brown spots or patches on the outer petals may be an indication of botrytis infection. Free of mechanical damage. Avoid flower stems with obvious excessive wilting symptoms which is an indication of improper temperature and humidity management.
Foam Info
Leaf quality in foam may not be as good as in vase, some varieties show good decorative life in foam.
Design Tips
Rose wraps should be left in place to support the flower heads for 1-2 hours during hydration. Remove foliage that falls below the solution level, but do not over-strip since the foliage aides the hydration process. Roses are versatile flowers, often associated with romance and elegance. They make beautiful vase arrangements, as well as single-stem gifts. They are commonly used as focal flowers and are very popular in wedding work. They are easy to work with: just drop a few stems in a loose vase arrangement. Since most come with their own beautiful foliage, you don’t need to add a lot more. Different varieties perform and open differently. Some open gradually, others open fully, more like a garden rose. Roses have accumulated deep symbolism and a devoted following. There's no better flower than roses to do the talking for you. Roses have long been used to send covert messages which are easily decoded if you know their secret language. From love at first site, friendship, or true love to new beginnings, appreciation, and congratulations, there is a color to symbolize your heartfelt sentiment.
Ethylene Sensitivity
Sensitive to ethylene. The sensitivity and the damage symptoms vary depending on the variety. Symptoms include poor opening, abnormal opening, petal shattering, wilting, bent neck and petal discoloration.
Pest & Disease Information
Botrytis on flower petals, leaves, and stems which significantly reduces vase life. Symptoms include brown blotches on petals and gray fuzzy growth on leaves, stems or flowers.
Troubleshooting
Buds fail to open: Possibly harvested too early, had extended period out of water, extended storage, exposure to temperature or humidity extremes, or can be due to ethylene exposure. Bent neck: dehydration, exposure to high temperature or low humidity, exposure to ethylene, high microbe growth in vase or bucket solution. A rose that exhibits bent neck conditions may be revived by re-cutting stems. Brown patches or visible gray mold on flowers, leave or stems: due to botrytis infection. Petal bluing in some varieties: due to improper production conditions, reaction of flower to some chemicals in vase solution.
