Tinted Roses: Endless Possibilities!
LivRio Magazine, Wedding Issue
June 2026, powered by FloraLife

Regardless of all the colors of roses available, there’s sure to be a particular color scheme that won’t be available in nature. Thankfully, tinted roses can always be relied on in situations where unique colors or color combinations are needed. For instance, sourcing blue flowers for patriotic arrangements can prove difficult, but Rio Roses offers solutions!
Unique Process
Three different ways that flowers can be enhanced with color:
- The uptake method: flowers are placed in a hydration solution which includes colored dye. The flowers uptake the dye through the xylem until it reaches the petals. Flowers tinted using this method often show signs of the color used throughout the stem and leaves, as well as the flowers.
- The dip method: only flower heads are dipped into a colored dye solution. The heads are colored and the leaves are left untouched.
- The spray method: the flowers are sprayed with a water-based color spray.
Helpful Hints
Important differences handling tinted or dyed flowers vs. natural:
- Dye from the flowers will color the water they are in, this is normal. No need to change the water or re-process.
- Placing dyed flowers in a clear vase or container you can see tinted water, which can be fun, but if you want to disguise this, use an opaque container.
- The foliage of dyed flowers can be slightly compromised in the dying process versus flowers that are 100% natural.
- When processed and placed in the same water/solution as the dyed flowers, natural blooms may take on a subtle tint.
- Dye can seep through the leaves. Always handle dyed flowers with care when processing or putting them on display and avoid contact with clothing or tablecloths as dye could transfer. Advise customers when purchasing so they can be sure to avoid this also.
Vase Care
Dyed flowers need TLC just as much as natural flowers! For best results we recommend:
- Start with a clean bucket sanitized with a floral cleaner like FloraLife® D.C.D.® Cleaner.
- Fill buckets with cool water mixed with flower food solution according to manufacturer’s directions. Do not put flowers directly into metal/galvanized buckets. Use clean, good quality water. Do not use water that has been treated with a water softener as the salt levels can be damaging to flowers. Use a dosing unit that is properly calibrated, or hand mix the solution according to label instructions.
- Remove any foliage that would fall below the solution level.
- Re-cut stems approximately 1″ / 3cm using clean and sanitized clippers or knife. Use FloraLife® Quick Dip to jump-start hydration and ensure that stems hydrate well.
- Place flowers in previously prepared container.
- Allow minimum 2 hours to hydrate; place buckets in an area with good airflow.
- Always remember FIFO (first in first out) when rotating flowers.
Tinted or not, flowers still need VIP treatment!
