Lilies originated in Japan. After World War 1, a suitcase full of bulbs arrived at the California/Oregon border and a fledgling industry was born. After Pearl Harbor, the Japanese supply was cut off, and the local business boomed. Today, 90% of the 11.5 million North American Easter lilies are produced in this region.
