New FloraLife® Shield Improves Flower Quality & Consistency

New FloraLife® Shield Postharvest Treatment Improves
Quality and Consistency of Flowers Throughout the Supply Chain. This innovative new postharvest treatment protects flowers from the negative elements in the environment, ensuring better quality flowers reach consumers.

WALTERBORO, S.C. – January 23, 2020 – FloraLife, a division of Smithers-Oasis Company, and worldwide leader in postharvest flower care and handling, introduces FloraLife® Shield, a postharvest treatment designed for protecting flowers from the negative elements in the environment throughout the distribution journey from grower to consumer.

Photo taken 26 days after harvest, depicts roses treated with FloraLife® Shield, stored dry for ten days at 1-3 °C, conditioned with FloraLife® Express Clear ULTRA 200 and moved through the transport and retail phase until they were transferred to vases with FloraLife® Express 300.

Increased Quality, Consistency & Uniformity

The innovative new postharvest treatment is designed for growers to increase the quality, consistency and uniformity of flowers. By integrating the use of FloraLife® Shield into farm harvesting practices, product loss can be reduced significantly, and product quality can be maximized, allowing for better profits for all involved in the industry.

More Sustainable

Since FloraLife® Shield reduces grower scrap, it also supports the sustainability initiatives identified in the FloraLife 2025 Sustainability Plan launched in 2019. The sustainability initiative is a long-term plan targeted for 2025 that implements the reduce, re-use, recycle and respect principles in four areas: water, innovation, production and consumption, and climate action.

Cost-effective

“FloraLife® Shield is a cost-effective solution to shield fresh-cut flowers from the negative elements in the environment as they travel throughout the supply chain to the consumer,” said Jim Daly, Vice President, FloraLife/Grower Global Operations and Corporate Research, FloraLife. “We’ve developed this innovative product to help growers reduce scrap and ultimately put better quality products in the hands of consumers for their enjoyment.”

Easy to Use

Available in 1-liter and 5-liter sizes, FloraLife® Shield treatment is a concentrated liquid that must be diluted with water before applying. The easy-to-use solution can be applied by spray or dip to flowers after they have been harvested. The product has been tested extensively on roses and FloraLife supports testing on any additional floral varieties. Availability depends on geographical region.
