Holiday Flowers are Big Business!

poin2It’s Christmas Day 2015, and those who celebrate it are likely to be spending this day with family and friends, and not reading floral industry blogs. In fact, you may wish to take a break from the subject of holiday flowers; Christmas/Hanukkah is the peak time of the floral year, and you have probably been pretty busy lately. How busy is it? Let’s take a look!

As we said, this is the busiest time of the year in the floral business (in the US), according to the folks at They have provided us with a little light holiday reading, in the form of Holiday Flower Spending Statistics!

Who is buying holiday flowers? Over 30 per cent of us! Christmas and Hanukkah account for 30 per cent of floral purchases during the year, as well as 30 per cent of dollar volume. This beats #2 Mother’s Day by over five points.

How much are we spending? About $20 each, according to the National Retail Federation.

Who is receiving holiday flowers? 34 per cent are buying holiday flowers for ourselves, 32 per cent buy for our parents or in-laws, and 29 per cent buy for our spouses.

Which holiday flowers are we buying? Multiple answers were allowed; here are the top three. 54 per cent buy fresh flowers for decoration, 53 per cent buy poinsettias, and 50 per cent buy fresh flowers as a gift, such as a hostess gift.

Speaking of poinsettias… The most popular colors of poinsettia are red (obviously) at 74 per cent, followed well behind by white at 8 per cent.

Finally… the most popular fresh holiday flowers are mixed bouquets and roses.
