Wholesaler/Retailer Recommendations

Buying Tips:

Ask: for cultivar name. Different cultivars may vary in disease resistance, ease of hydration and vase life.

Avoid: Immature flowers (ones harvested too early) will generally not open properly. Purchase asters as you would purchase chrysanthemums, more open (at least three-quarters open) than in bud stage. Avoid stems with yellowing or black leaves as this is an indication of improper storage or growing conditions.

Processing:

Unpack immediately. Remove foliage below solution level. Recut stems.

Pretreatment:

Place stems in one of Floralife’s hydration products to promote solution uptake and hydration. This treatment will help increase bud opening, decrease flower wilting and bent neck and also will help keep flower stems free flowing.

There are two Floralife® hydration products to consider:

1. HydraFlor® 100 is a hydrating treatment for all flower types to rehydrate and condition flowers after a period of dry transport for increased quality and enhanced flower life. Hydrate flowers 1- 2 hours at room temperature or overnight in the cooler at 34 - 38˚ F.

2. Floralife® Quick Dip 100 is a ready-to-use version of a hydration solution that requires no mixing or measuring. This quick one-second dip might be more suitable to retail flower shops.

Leaves often will wilt or die before flowers, therefore, it is very important to keep hydration / bucket / vase solutions and stems clean. Using one of Floralife’s hydration pretreatments can help prevent dehydration of aster

Storage and Transport Solution 200:

For flowers that will be stored in a cooler use, Floralife® 200 or Floralife® Clear 200, or Floralife® Clear ULTRA 200 or eZ Dose® storage treatment solutions.

Place flower stems in a clean bucket of solution and keep them treated during transport or storage until it is time to prepare them for consumer sales. Add additional solution as needed. Change out bucket solution at least once per week and use clean buckets prior to filling with new solution. Keep in cooler at 34 - 38˚ F.

Vase Solution 300:

This step in flower food treatment is part of the last stage of the postharvest care and handling prior to the end consumer’s purchase. Floralife®’s vase flower foods encourage the flower to properly start opening, showing vibrant colors. These vase solutions will work with in all OASIS® floral foam designs and vase arrangements. The vase solutions hydrate and nourishes the flowers for maximum enjoyment.

Recut flower stems with a clean, sharp knife or cutting tool, taking off 1 inch. Place flower stems in a clean bucket of Floralife Crystal Clear® solution for store floral displays, into vases with Floralife Crystal Clear® for floral displays or vase arrangements, and in OASIS® floral foam that has been soaked in Floralife Crystal Clear® flower food solution for foam arrangements. Keep all flowers in the cooler until time for arranging and/or displaying. Add additional solution as needed.

Ethylene Sensitivity:  Low ethylene sensitivity.

Vase Life: 5 to 10 days.
