1. A: EthylBloc™ technology is a patented powder chemistry which when combined with a mixing buffer solution releases a gas that inhibits the negative effects of ethylene on plants.

 

2. A: Ethylene is the odorless, tasteless, and invisible natural plant hormone which is part of the process of senescence (flower aging). Ethylene is damaging to the flower industry, as it makes flowers die more quickly. Studies have reported that the harmful effects of ethylene are responsible for up to 30% of crop losses in the floriculture industry. It is a gas and can affect flowers in very minute quantities (less than 1 part per million).

 

3. A: Ethylene is produced by many different sources, including fresh flowers, engine exhaust, botrytis, ripening fruit, and cigarette smoke.

 

4. A: EthylBloc™ technology treatment can take place in any area which can be virtually sealed. This can include an abandoned or operating cooler, a truck container in transit, a room, or tented area, etc.

 

5. A: Mix a recommended amount of powder (based on the cubic feet of the treatment chamber) with the liquid mixing solution in a plastic container in the center of the room, and leave it sealed for 4 to 6 hours. It releases a gas which binds at the site of plants where ethylene would normally bind. This prevents ethylene from binding and helps flowers last longer.

 

6. A: EthylBloc™ technology is effective on ethylene sensitive flowers and plants. In the case of flowers, buds must be showing color for them to be receptive to treatment. This was also true with STS.

 

7. A: EthylBloc™ technology has been evaluated and tested during the past several years in both the laboratory and in the field using real world situations. The results have been virtually the same between STS treated product and EthylBloc™ technology treated product.

 

8. A: Premature wilting, leaf wilting, petal shattering, epinasty (downward curvature of leaves), immature flower buds not fully developing, lead abscission, chlorosis (yellowing), and translucent petals are symptomatic of ethylene damage.

 

9. A: EthylBloc™ technology can be used at most temperatures, including cooler temperatures of 1 to 3˚ C, and ambient room temperatures of 20 to 22˚ C. The treatment time for cooler temperatures is longer (8 – 16 hours) whereas, the minimum treatment time at room temperature is 4 hours.

 

10. A: Every part of the distribution channel can use EthylBloc™ technology, such as growers, shippers, brokers, wholesalers, bouquet suppliers, and retailers. In fact, the earlier EthylBloc™ technology is used after harvest, the more positive the results you will experience in postharvest quality.

 

11. A: No. Studies have shown that repeat treatments are not harmful to the quality or the life of the flower. Repeat treatments are beneficial in the case of multi-floreted flowers, i.e., larkspur and miniature carnations, because immature blooms continue to develop through the distribution channels. This results in new active ethylene sites which can be inhibited by multiple treatments.
