Floralife presents answers to some Frequently Asked Questions about the care and handling of cut flowers. If you don’t see your question below, please write to email@example.com.
A: Typically, wholesale florists and growers use our Floralife® 200 line of products for storage and transport solutions. Consumers typically use our vase solutions such as:
• Floralife® Flower Food 300,
• Floralife Crystal Clear®,
• Special Blend 300 for hard water, and
• Floralife Special Blend PURE Water® Flower Food.
If you need more specific information, send a water sample to Floralife® for recommendations. We will test your water for pH, alkalinity, hardness, and total dissolved solids. We will recommend the best flower food for your situation.
What is the best way to accomplish this?
A: Temperature is key! You should still be concerned with hydrating and feeding the flowers (to prevent stress). However, use cold water (with flower food) and keep them as close to 34 - 38° F as possible. The cold water will speed up the cooling down process. We designed our Floralife® 200 and Clear 200 formulas for storage of fresh cut flowers. Note: Tropicals are an exception to this temperature range; they should be stored at 50° F.
A: You should change the solution twice a week or as you change out the buckets. You should clean them with Floralife® D.C.D.® Cleaner before you add fresh flower food solution.
A: Yes. Always soak your foam in a properly mixed solution of fresh flower food. Be sure to follow the product directions.
Hydraflor® 100 hydrating treatment for cut flowers?
A: Floralife® Quick Dip instant hydrating treatment is a ready-to-use solution.
• Recut the stems.
• Dip the freshly cut stems into Floralife® Quick Dip instant Hydrating treatment (a couple of
inches in a plastic container is sufficient.)
• Place the stems into flower food, such as, Floralife® 200, Flower Food 300 or Floralife® Crystal Clear® hydrating treatment. Follow the directions on the label for proper dosing.
or just roses?
A: You can use Floralife® Quick Dip instant hydrating treatment on all types of flowers.
A: No. Floralife® Quick Dip Instant Hydration Pretreatment is a hydration product. It is intended to be a pretreatment for the flowers before flower food. Mixing the two products together throws the chemical formulation out of balance and could shorten vase life.
A: No. If you dose according to the product label, our flower food will not harm your bulb crops.
A: No. The solution should still be clear when you dilute it in the vase. Extreme heat causes the sugar to turn yellow, but this is not a problem for the flowers.
for cut flowers, a milky 'residue' results, no matter how long I mix the solution.
Is this a problem?
A: No. Both Floralife® Flower Food 300 and Floralife® 200 storage and transport treatment for cut flowers contain ingredients that create a flocculent, which can look like a milky residue. This flocculent is good for cut flowers. If you would like a clear solution, try Floralife® Crystal Clear® or Flower Food Clear 300.
A: Yes. Floralife Crystal Clear® will yield a clear solution in any type of vase, but is not recommended for metal containers.
A: The acid in flower food will react with metal. We do not recommend that you use flower food in metal vases.
A: Yes. Any plant that benefits from misting will benefit from Floralife® Finishing Touch hydration and protection spray. In our labs we have tested begonia, chrysanthemum, cyclamen, spath, philodendron and diffenbachia, among others.
